Low Chlorine (low salt)

UF/IFAS recommends using slow-release, low- or zero-phosphorus fertilizer (e.g., 15-0-15 or 16-0-8) on Florida lawns, applying no more than 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per application. Fertilize 2–4 times annually starting in April, skipping "winterizer" products, and avoiding application before heavy rain or during summer rainy season restrictions.

Key UF/IFAS Lawn Fertilizer Recommendations

  • When to Fertilize: Start in late March or early April once the grass greens up naturally. In Central/North Florida, apply 2–3 times during the growing season (spring/summer). In South Florida, 3–4 applications may be used, avoiding the rainy season.
  • Fertilizer Selection (N-P-K): Use a "balanced" fertilizer with a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio of Nitrogen (N) to Potassium (K). Examples include 15-0-15, 16-0-8, or 24-0-11.
  • Phosphorus (P): Avoid using phosphorus (the middle number) unless a soil test indicates a deficiency, as it is often high in Florida soils and causes water pollution.
  • Slow-Release Nitrogen: Choose fertilizers containing 65% or more slow-release (coated, controlled-release) nitrogen to ensure nutrients are available over a longer period.
  • Application Rate: Apply a maximum of 1 lb. of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per application.
  • Environmental Protection: Keep fertilizer 10–15 feet away from waterways and storm drains. Sweep any fertilizer granules off impervious surfaces (driveways/sidewalks) back onto the turf.
  • Summer Restrictions: Many Florida municipalities have fertilizer ordinances that ban or restrict nitrogen and phosphorus application from June 1 to Sept. 30.

Calculation Example
To apply 1 lb. of Nitrogen using a 15-0-15 bag:

  1. Divide 100 by the first number (100÷15=6.7100 divided by 15 equals 6.7  ----- 100÷15=6.7).
  2. Apply 6.7 lbs. of fertilizer per 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn
